Overview

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition booth is a mainstay at the State Fair of Texas. The goal of the booth is to provide a playful space for school age children to learn about healthy eating. The Department recognized they were missing opportunities to attract fairgoers, and were looking for ways to make a larger impact.

Execution

We started by examining the client’s large library of online tools and resources to see what would lend itself well to a physical experience. We quickly focused our attention on the Seasonality Wheel, a that tool prompts the user to choose a month from a wheel to see what produce is grown that month. Working with our fabrication partner, Blue Genie, we pitched an analog carnival wheel infused with sophisticated sensors and lights to bombastically reimagine this experience.

The Seasonality Wheel attraction was so successful that we were invited to collaborate further on the booth’s other interactive elements, including a centerpiece with simpler mechanics for the younger kids, and an online photo booth for the whole family to engage with.

Outcome

Engagement significantly increased with hundreds of people a day spending over twice as long visiting the booth. The booth have since been expanded to be deployed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and we have collaborated with the Department further with other new and interesting physical experiences.
